The boat has been neglected and had a lot of rain water sitting in the bilges. This appears to have got into the gearbox which is in a pretty bad state, however, the engine seems to run OK.
I am planning on replacing the gearbox with a new Techno Drive TMC 260, but before I do that should I consider replacing the engine at the same time. Is the XDP 4.90 considered to be a 'good' engine?
The boat was a bargain so if I do end up replacing the engine and gearbox it won't be the end of the world.

The Peugeot 308 suspension combines sportiness and self-discipline with sporty settings. The front suspension is independent, MacPherson, and the rear is a semi-independent, torsion beam. In general, the suspension is energy-intensive, responds to bumps in the road surface with minimal body buildup.
As for equipment, the Peugeot 308 is offered in four equipment options – Access, SR, Active and Allure. The list of standard equipment, depending on the version, includes air conditioning, ABS, ESP, EBFD, EBA, front and rear power windows, six airbags, emergency braking assistance (AFU), on-board computer, CD-player and much more. Also, any of the versions can be equipped with equipment from a long list of options.
According to the results of the crash tests using the EuroNCAP method, the Peugeot 308 received a maximum of five stars for the protection of adult passengers and four out of five stars for the protection of passenger-children.
